Nappanee Geography and Overview

Nappanee is a city located in Elkhart and Kosciusko counties in the state of Indiana the U.S. It had a population of 6,648 at the time of the 2010 U.S. Census and had grown to 6,913 by the time of the 2020 U.S. Census. In Algonquian, it is likely that the name Nappanee means flour. Several tourist attractions can be found in the town of Nappanee such as Amish Acres, Nappanee Raceway, the Arts & Crafts Festival, and the Apple Festival.

It was several hundred years ago that the Mound Builders built their mounds north of the marshes. The Pottawatomi people arrived in the area in the 1700s from close to Green Bay, Wisconsin, partially displacing Miami’s inhabitants. It is believed that the Pottawatomis had settlements on the Elkhart River at Elkhart, Goshen, and Waterford, as well as at Monoquet in what would become Kosciusko County, Indiana, between Leesburg and Warsaw. In this regard, it is likely that Plymouth-Goshen Road near Nappanee is following the path of an old Indian Trail. After various treaties and what Pottawatomi call the “Trail of Death,” white settlers began moving into the area in 1830.
